Kornelis Ndapakamang is a master weaver of East Sumba ikat textiles. He first began assisting his mother, also a weaver, from the age of 15 and undertook weaving seriously in 1994 at the age of 22. During that year, he became a member of a natural dye weaving group called Nduma Luri which his mother had formed that very year. The group was renamed Paluanda Lama Hamu in 2005.
In 2013, he formed his own weaving group with the name of Praikundu and currently leads around 30 weavers in this group. His expertise lies in the mastery of the various techniques that are required in the making of an East Sumba ikat piece – out of the meticulous 42 steps that are involved such as the design of the motifs, the dyeing of the threads and so forth, he is considered to have mastered around 90% of the process from start to finish.
Kornelis has also travelled with Perkumpulan WARLAMI, including to WITS in Kuching, Malaysia in 2017 and in Khon Kaen, Thailand in 2018.
